SEO vs GEO: Why Your Website Needs Both

The difference between ranking in Google and being cited in AI answers, and why you need both.

Until about two years ago, visibility meant one thing: your rank in Google. Now there is a second path — people ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity and get a finished answer without opening any website. If you are not named in that answer, you do not exist for that customer.

SEO: showing up in search results

The goal is for your page to appear when someone searches. The pillars are well established:

  • Technical — speed, mobile, sound links, a sitemap, and no duplicate pages.
  • Content — a page per topic, with a written title and description, answering a real question.
  • Authority — other sites referencing you, and mentions in credible places.
  • Local — a properly categorised Google Business Profile with reviews, if your business has a location.

GEO: being cited in AI answers

The competition here is different. The engine is not ranking ten links — it composes one answer and picks its sources. What gets your site picked:

  • Explicit, quotable facts. "Founded in November 2014" is a sentence that gets lifted. "Long experience in the market" is not.
  • Structured data that tells the engine who you are, what you do and where — without guessing.
  • Question-and-answer format. A well-written FAQ page gets quoted more than anything else.
  • An llms.txt file — a plain-text summary of your company and pages for these engines.
  • Allowing AI crawlers in robots.txt. Many block them without realising they are removing their own chance of being cited.
  • Consistency. The same name, address and phone everywhere. Contradictions make an engine distrust you.

The practical difference in one line

SEO gets Google to show your link. GEO gets an AI to say your name. The first brings a visit; the second brings trust — and usually a visit too, since these engines now cite sources.

What the two share

Fortunately most of the work is the same: clear content, sound structure, speed, and structured data. What GEO adds on top is not much, but there is no substitute for it — and most sites in Egypt have not done it yet.

How to measure

SEO is measured in Search Console: impressions, clicks, position. GEO has no mature tooling yet — the practical method is to ask the engines themselves questions like "best software company in Tanta" and see whether your name comes up, then repeat monthly.
